In the movie Blood Diamond with Leonardo DiCaprio talks with the American journalist and uses the phrase “TIA This is Africa.” The meaning is basically go with the flow/don’t expect anything to run on schedule so just take it for what it is. It has also come to explain things you see that you would never see at home such as unmarked missing manhole convers or 5 people on a motorcycle. You get the idea. In my travels since seeing that movie, the groups I have been with have also adopted it: TIC in China and TIA in Argentina. I feel that it is only fitting to coin it now for Jamaica. And, because of my new found love for Twitter I have decided to add the hashtag (#). I can only anticipate that there are going to be so many times where the only way to possibly describe something that happened is simply to say #TIJ.
